Popular Stool Softener Recalled Over Risk of Infection

Rugby-brand Diocto Liquid – a stool-softening product manufactured by PharmaTech LLC (Davie, FL) – has been voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer over a risk of contamination. All Diocto Liquid NDC 0536-0590-85 is included as part of the recall. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), PharmaTech LLC is taking measures to identify consumers who may have purchased the affected product and alert them of the recall. The recall follows at least two “adverse event reports” of Burkholderia cepacia infections from individuals who utilized the product. What is a Burkholderia Cepacia Infection?

Burkholderia cepacia is a group of bacteria that is common in water and soil. Although the bacteria is generally not a threat to a healthy adult, it can be dangerous – even deadly – for individuals with compromised immune systems and/or who suffer from conditions such as cystic fibrosis or other chronic conditions of the lung. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that Burkholderia cepacia infections have a mortality rate of approximately 40 percent. In other words, for every ten individuals who contract a B. cepacia infection, the CDC would expect that at least four of these individuals would die as a result.
