Failure to Timely Recognize Appendicitis

Gabe Sassin successfully resolved a medical malpractice claim arising from a physician’s failure to recognize the classic signs and symptoms of acute appendicitis. Despite presenting with a clinical picture consistent with appendicitis, the patient was discharged home with an undiagnosed ruptured appendix. The patient returned to the same physician days later in a deteriorated condition, at which point the rupture was finally identified. By then, the delay in diagnosis had allowed the development of an abscess and systemic sepsis. Despite aggressive treatment over the course of three months, the patient ultimately succumbed to overwhelming infection and its complications. The matter was resolved through a confidential pre-suit settlement.
