Trial-Ready Hospital Negligence Attorneys for Northwest Medical Center Patients and Families
Hastings Law Firm’s hospital negligence lawyers bring experienced representation to Northwest Medical Center patients and families in Tucson, Arizona. Our founder, Tommy Hastings, is Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law and has represented injured patients since 2001. The Types of Northwest Medical Center Lawsuits Our Hospital Malpractice Attorneys Handle
Hastings Law Firm handles Northwest Medical Center lawsuits in Tucson, Arizona, over labor, delivery and newborn care, emergency and trauma care, and robotic-assisted, weight loss and spine surgery. We build each one from the hospital’s own records, read against what careful care at each step would have required.
The cases we see most often at a full-service hospital like Northwest Medical Center include:
- Labor, delivery and newborn care errors. Signs of fetal distress can be missed, a delivery can be delayed or mishandled, or a newborn’s decline in the special care nursery can go unnoticed. The harm can shape a child’s whole life and change what a family needs for years to come. Our Arizona birth injury attorneys compare the fetal heart tracings with the labor notes and the nursery charting.
- Emergency and trauma care errors. A serious injury or illness can be judged less urgent than it is, a needed test can go unordered, or a transfer to a higher-level trauma center can come too late. Lost hours can turn a treatable condition into a permanent disability or a fatal one. Our Arizona emergency room malpractice lawyers rebuild the timeline from the triage notes, the orders placed, and the transfer records.
- Errors in robotic-assisted, weight loss and spine operations. An organ, nerve or blood vessel can be cut or damaged during the procedure, or a complication can be missed in the days that follow. The patient may face more operations and additional recovery time, and some of these injuries never fully heal. Our Arizona robotic surgery malpractice attorneys set the operative report beside the recovery and nursing notes.
While these are common claim types, our hospital malpractice attorneys handle any valid medical negligence case that arises at this hospital.

About Northwest Medical Center on La Cholla Boulevard in Tucson
Northwest Medical Center is a hospital at 6200 N. La Cholla Blvd. in Tucson, Arizona, which Northwest Healthcare calls the network’s flagship hospital. Its services include emergency and trauma care, maternity and newborn care, intensive care, and heart, orthopedic, spine and robotic-assisted surgery.
The hospital is in Pima County, and Northwest’s internal medicine residents train primarily there. The network’s other hospitals are Oro Valley Hospital, Northwest Medical Center Houghton and Northwest Medical Center Sahuarita. It also runs freestanding emergency centers, which are separate facilities from the La Cholla campus.
Northwest Healthcare is owned through subsidiaries of Community Health Systems, a for-profit company. The hospital describes itself as a tax-paying health care provider, and it is a private hospital, not a government facility.
The campus provides 24/7 emergency care and cardiovascular and medical/surgical intensive care units. The state lists it among Arizona’s Level III trauma centers. Northwest says its trauma team stabilizes and treats significant injuries and coordinates transfers to higher-level trauma centers when a patient needs more specialized care.
The Women’s Center at Northwest is a stand-alone birthing center offering labor and delivery, cesarean births and fetal monitoring. It also provides high-risk pregnancy care and a special care nursery for newborns. The hospital also offers cardiology and cardiac surgery with a structural heart program, orthopedics, neurosurgery, spine surgery, and total knee and hip replacement. Its surgeons perform bariatric surgery and robotic-assisted surgery, including general, urologic, gynecologic, thoracic and orthopedic procedures.
Northwest Medical Center is a Primary Stroke Center, is accredited by the Joint Commission, and provides inpatient and outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy. One patient’s treatment can move from the emergency department to an operating room, then to intensive care and therapy, and each of those areas keeps its own records. Some patients also receive care at other Tucson hospitals, such as Tucson Medical Center, Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital or Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital, before or after a stay at La Cholla.
Can You File a Lawsuit Against Northwest Medical Center, the Doctor, or Both?
You may be able to file a lawsuit against Northwest Medical Center, an individual doctor, or both, depending on who made the error and who employed that person. Under Kopp v. Physician Group of Arizona, a hospital is responsible for negligent work by its actual employees, such as nurses and technicians, in the course of their jobs.
A doctor answers for the care that doctor personally provided, and not every physician who treats patients at the hospital works for it. Northwest’s billing and insurance page tells patients they may receive separate bills from physicians, surgeons, pathologists, radiologists and other professionals. For that reason, the records have to show who employed each provider involved in the patient’s care.
If a doctor is an independent contractor, the hospital may still be responsible when its own conduct led the patient to reasonably believe the doctor was its employee or agent. That result is not automatic, and a properly disclosed, signed independent-contractor form can defeat it. Whether you need a lawyer to sue a hospital, a physician, or both, identifying every health care provider or facility involved comes first.
Arizona also requires a preliminary expert opinion affidavit early in the case. In this sworn statement, a qualified expert explains how the standard of care was broken and how that caused the harm. Without it, a court can dismiss the claim.
The claim itself must prove that the provider fell below the accepted standard of care. It must also prove that this failure was a proximate cause of the injury, meaning a legal cause of it. Our Tucson hospital malpractice lawyers explain how these rules apply to a claim against a hospital.

Does Signing a Consent Form at Northwest Medical Center Prevent a Malpractice Claim in Arizona?
Signing a consent form at Northwest Medical Center in Tucson does not by itself prevent a malpractice claim in Arizona. Under Shetter v. Rochelle, once a patient gives informed consent, a claim that the care itself was careless is brought as malpractice. The form records that the risks were explained, but it does not excuse care that fell below the accepted standard.
Patients sign these forms before robotic-assisted, weight loss, spine and joint operations, and before a cesarean birth. Informed consent means the patient was told what the procedure involves and what could go wrong, and then agreed to it. Arizona treats a failure to explain those risks as a negligence claim. The measure is what a reasonably prudent provider in that field would have disclosed before the patient agreed.
A separate rule covers an operation the patient never agreed to, or one that went beyond the consent the patient gave. In Duncan v. Scottsdale Medical Imaging, the Arizona Supreme Court held that treatment outside the limits of a patient’s consent can be brought as battery, an unauthorized touching.
A known risk that was properly explained is not malpractice on its own. When that complication happened because of careless technique, the patient can still have a claim. Our Arizona informed consent attorneys read the signed forms against the operative notes to compare what was agreed to with what was done.
